2008 Fiddler's Grove Senior Mandolin Champion Danny Bishop is a multi-instrumentalist from a family whose traditional music heritage encompasses at least three generations. He describes himself as "one of the luckiest folks on earth, [because I] grew up in the middle of it." Born in Bat Cave, Bishop began to learn the guitar and mandolin at the age of five, taught by his father who played the mandolin, banjo, and guitar. He honed his skills in the rich Asheville bluegrass scene, and remembers sitting at Lester Flatt's knee, watching him play backstage at the old Asheville Civic Center. As he got older, he picked up the fiddle as well.
Bishop also became interested in instrument repair. "I was fortunate again," he says, in being able to have an apprenticeship with Morganton instrument builder Marvin Willis. In 1997 Bishop opened his own business. Today he operates Bishop's Violins from his home in Fairview, and can service most any string band instrument.
As a performer, Bishop played with Rock Springs, a bluegrass gospel band that included Marc Pruett and Buddy Melton, and other great area musicians. Now he plays in Cane Creek, a bluegrass band that features his daughter Danielle. A high schooler, Danielle is already a celebrated bluegrass fiddler (she was the 2006 Fiddler of the Festival at Fiddlers Grove) carrying on the tradition of her family and the Bishops' Western North Carolina home.
Danny Bishop and Cane Creek are available to perform for concerts, at festivals, and other venues. Bishops' Violins is open by appointment.
