Buncombe Turnpike
Point of contact: Tom Godleski

The bluegrass quintet Buncombe Turnpike is comprised entirely of western North Carolina natives. The band plays a variety of tunes ranging from traditional and contemporary bluegrass to gospel and hand-crafted originals. It takes its name from the historic thoroughfare that ran through the mountains of western North Carolina from Greeneville, TN to Greenville, SC in the 1800s.

Lead singer, bass player, and band founder Tom Godleski was born and raised in Asheville, and is also a writer, woodcarver, and storyteller. Evan Swink of Greensboro plays guitar, John Duncan of Asheville plays fiddle, and Seth Rhinehart plays banjo.

Buncombe Turnpike performs around the region but has also played across the country and traveled to Spain for performances. In 2007 they opened for Marty Stuart, for the Cherryholmes Family, and for Sam Bush, and took first place in the North Carolina Mountain State Fair bluegrass competition. They have recorded three albums and as of early 2009 are working on a fourth.
