Blue Eyed Girl

Blue Eyed Girl

Old-time band Buncombe County, NC

The three women who make up the old-time band Blue Eyed Girl have all spent their lives absorbing traditional music and dance. The Asheville area-residents grew up in families for whom old-time music was a way of life, and as girls they picked up the tradition at a very young age.

Banjo player Annie Fain Liden grew up in Brasstown. Her parents, Martha Owen and David Liden, are well-known area old-time musicians who are also listed in this Traditional Artist Directory. Annie Fain teaches banjo and creates handmade books in Asheville. Mandolinist and guitarist Ellie Grace also comes from a family of musicians. In addition to touring with Blue Eyed Girl and with her sister Leela, Ellie plays with the Dirk Powell Band, and teaches percussive dance at UNC-Asheville. Pearl Mueller, who grew up in Black Mountain, has been playing the fiddle since she was a small child. She is also a member of the contra dance band Mock Turtle Soup.

All three musicians are also accomplished traditional dancers, a talent that they weave into their performances.
