Wilma Millsaps

Wilma Wakefield Millsaps lives in a section of North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains that has been home to her ancestors for centuries. She is descended from some of the earliest European settlers in the area, as well as from the Cherokee families who preceded them.

The Snowbird Mountain Boys, the band Wilma and her husband Bill formed in 1969, traveled with Tim McCoy’s Wild West Show in the early 1970s. Like a North Carolina campus of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys, the Snowbird Mountain Boys was an academy for dozens of great up-and-coming musicians. In the Millsaps’ long and prestigious career, they recorded numerous albums and shared stages with many of the heroes of classic bluegrass. Bill Millsaps passed away in January, 2009.

Wilma and Bill’s son, Stephen, operates the Millsaps Music retail store in Robbinsville.
