David Holt’s State of Music Set to Premiere

UNC-TV’s latest project, “David Holt’s State of Music,”  is set to premiere on Thursday, January 29 at 10:00 PM.

David Holt has spent his life learning and performing traditional American music. It has taken him from the most remote coves of southern Appalachia to the bright lights of TV studios and the Grand Old Opry stage. In this show, David introduces viewers to modern masters of traditional music in the Southern mountains and remembers the legends who taught him.

Featured artists are the phenomenal guitarist Bryan Sutton, multi-talented musician and ballad singer Josh Goforth, rising star Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, fiddle virtuoso Bruce Molsky, African American gospel torch-bearers Wilbur Tharpe and Lena Mae Perry (who perform as the Branchettes), and Haywood County bluegrass supergroup Balsam Range.

David lives in Asheville with his wife and partner, Ginny Callaway, co-founder of High Windy Records.

He has hosted public TV’s Folkways and Great Scenic Railway Journeys as well as public radio’s long-running series Riverwalk Live at the Landing. He is also well-known for his years of touring with the late Doc Watson.

The Blue Ridge National Heritage Area provided a $2,500 sponsorship to partially underwrite this program.
