Welcome to the interactive map of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area! Use this map to learn more about the region and help plan your travel. Instructions are provided below.


The North Carolina mountains are blessed with many special places that represent outstanding examples of the region’s cultual and natural heritage. Eighty sites were designated as such in 1996 by the Governor’s Year of the Mountains Commission.

These sites are shown on this interactive map and have been sorted into trails representing the major heritage themes of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. All of the sites are profiled on our website.

Using the Map

  • Click on the navigation boxes to the left to select heritage trails and themes of interest.
  • Mouse over the markers to identify attractions.
  • Use the scale bar at the upper right corner of the map to zoom in and out – move the bar down to zoom in, move the bar up to zoom out.
  • To scroll across the map, use your mouse (left click and hold) to drag the map in the desired direction.
  • To zoom in on a particular location, place that location in the center of the map and then zoom in.
  • Click on the "Hybrid" or "Satellite" buttons in the upper left corner to add satellite imagery.
