Mingus Mill

The historic Mingus Mill, located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, preserves the centerpiece of a mountain farming community.  Built in 1886 by German immigrant John Mingus, the Mingus Mill uses a water-powered turbine instead of a water wheel to power all of the machinery in the building.  The Mingus Mill was operated as a custom mill, catering to the personal preferences of its customers.  The stones used to grind wheat came from France, while those used to grind corn were of local origin.

The restored Mingus Mill is operated by the National Park Service as a historic exhibit.  A miller works on-site to demonstrate the process of grinding corn and wheat into corn meal and flour.  Corn meal, flour, and other Mingus Mill related items are available for purchase.

Mingus Mill Hours of Operation
The Mingus Mill is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from mid-March through mid-November.  It is also open on Thanksgiving weekend.

The Mingus Mill is located a half-mile north of the Oconaluftee Visitor Center on US 441, on the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
